Chanelle Dupuis

Brown University, PhD French and Francophone Studies

Hello/ Bonjour!

My name is Chanelle Dupuis and I am a third year PhD student in the French and Francophone Studies Department at Brown University.

My research focuses on 20th and 21st century French and Francophone literature where I analyze smell and the link between odors and trauma, environmental change, and resistance. With an interest in perception and the sensorium, my work reflects on sensory perception and installs itself in the field of Sensory Studies. Beyond this, I have worked on folktales of the Amazon and written on the shifting smell of water in rivers in Amazonia. With extensive translation experience, I have worked between the languages of Portuguese, Spanish, French, and English and enjoy proofreading and writing. Coming from Québec, Canada, I also enjoy bringing my French Canadian culture into the classroom and teaching French with an emphasis on French-speaking communities outside of France.

I started the SSG and this website to help grow the field of Smell Studies and make the field’s research more accessible to other disciplines and the general public. I am excited to share my joy for all things smelly with you and encourage you to explore this site to learn more!
